Orono High School (OHS), in Long Lake, Minnesota, is a public high school located in a transition area between urban and rural landscapes. The student body consists of mostly middle class families and has a small minority population. Curriculum and programs at Orono address the post-secondary needs of students who may be considering college or work place entry.

The required curriculum at Orono High School consists of English, social studies, science, mathematics, physical education/health, and fine arts. Around 60 elective courses are offered at OHS, including fine arts, business/marketing education, technology education, and world languages (German, Chinese, and Spanish).

The school’s “Credit for Learning” option allows students at any level to test out of a course if they can demonstrate competence in the skills, concepts, and objectives of the course. The assessment of this competence may include written or oral examinations, product or performance exhibits, or teacher input.

Student who are interested in entering the workforce immediately upon graduation can choose to participate in a career-focused program. “Workplace Readiness” is a course that enables students to gain an appreciation and understanding of the skills necessary to be a successful, competent employee in today’s ever-changing workforce. Units in the class include: résumé writing, interviewing techniques and role plays, stock market investments, human relations, management, personal development, current events, and career exploration. Once accepted in the program, a student qualifies to participate in an on-the-job-training program, with an opportunity to apply the skills developed in the classroom to the job situation.
